Blog Assignment #1

Researching a film's portrayal of a human's mind can show common  misinterpretations of  mental illnesses. An example of this would be in the film, Shine, which is based on a Australian schizophrenic pianist, David Helfgott. The film portrays some aspects of schizophrenia to inspire viewers and dramatize David's life but, using several scholarly articles I will discuss the realities of the disease in my research paper.
My first source is Schizophrenia by Rebecca J. Frey, an article from The Gale Encyclopedia of Disorder. I found this source in the Gale Virtual Reference Library. The article provides in detail the prognosis of various schizophrenic patients, the sub-types of the disease, causes, symptoms and treatments. This article adds accurate and scholarly information about schizophrenia that is not portrayed in the film Shine. It fits my research topic because unlike in the film Shine that portrays the human mind based on what the writer may see or assume about people with mental illness, this article writes about what has been studied and analyzed about patients suffering from schizophrenia. This scholarly source states that patients often find it difficult to concentrate to concentrate on work, studies, or formerly pleasurable activities because of the constant static or buzz of hallucinated voices.(Frey851)
My second source is The Effects of T.V. and Film Exposure on Knowledge About and Attitudes Toward Mental Disorders  by Joachim Kimmerle and Ulrike Cress. I found this source using Ebsco. This article gives me experimental studies on researchers who believe that people don't learn as much watching a film on schizophrenia compared to watching a documentary on the mental disease. This article fits my research topic because I have actual evidence from experiments that films portrayal on the human mind can sometimes show false truths in film which create a lack of knowledge on issues such as schizophrenia. In this article researchers believe people will acquire not only certain attitudes but also basic knowledge about mental disorders from mass media because mental disorders are portrayed in the media largely in a wrong and stigmatizing manner.(Kimmerle&Cress933)

My Research Topic

The movie of choice for my topic will be Shine. My research topic will be how the actor portrays schizophrenia compared to how it is in real life. In film we know actors can dramatize the subject the film is based on to make for a great story line and movie. I will have to research and dig deep to find the the accuracies / inaccuracies of schizophrenia based on David Helfgott's life.

Welcome to my blog. My name is Tenia Hunt. I am currently a second year student attending LaGuardia Community College with a Criminal Justice major. I plan on graduating LaGuardia Fall 2015 and continuing my studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in hopes of being a correctional officer. My face usually lead people to believe I am angry all the time or I that I may be a mean individual. This is what led me to my decision in following a career path in Criminal Justice in which I won't get scrutinized about my continuous serious facial expression. Don't judge a book by it's cover though (what a cliché) I am a friendly person. I enjoy suspenseful thriller movies that often have a ending you were not expecting because I like to be surprised and put things together in a film that I may have overlooked. My favorite books are novels written by african american authors that take place in rough black neighborhoods and I read many books now on my phone instead of hard copy. With that being said I am a technology optimist because technology has created ways to allow people to become more accessible to things such as books, money, school, food, information, and the list goes on. It makes life easier (which is why some may have preferred to take a hybrid class).Technology has also allowed people to created many forms of communication. Most people today I believe are optimistic about technology because in the advanced parts of the world people use technology. Despite the downfalls of technology like online bullying, nuclear weapons or hackers, I don't think people would want to go back to living in a society without technology.
